Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
Grease and flour one or two round cake pans. Sift together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt; set aside.
In a large bowl, cream together the sugar and butter until light and fluffy.
Beat in the eggs one at a time until well blended, then stir in the vanilla extract.
Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and mix until just blended.
Pour batter into prepared pans. Bake for 25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cakes comes out clean.
Cool in pans for 20 minutes before removing to cool completely on wire racks.
